The House last night approved an emergency plan to prevent the collapse of the domestic auto industry....Voting against the bill were Charles Dent (R., Pa.), Jim Gerlach (R.,Pa.),and Frank A. LoBiondo (R., N.J.)

Stein for Congress 2010Our Congressman VOTED "NO" TO GIVING A LIFELINE to General Motors and Chrysler 2 years ago.  Two years later  we have Toyota, and the most outrageous PRODUCT recall in modern history.  This is the same company that contributed most- to the near destruction of Detroit- starting in earnest  30 years ago- when Toyota eagerly dumped cars on our soil while their home market was protected.

Toyota starts recall of another Lexus model dragged into safety scandal

As bad as the safety scandal engulfing Toyota has become, its Lexus luxury division has gotten off pretty lightly. But that's beginning to change. The accident that sparked the wave of scrutiny of the Japanese automaker involved a Lexus, the ES350. It was the loaner car from a dealer that killed a California highway patrolman and his family last August.

The gorgeous 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP
Where can I lease one these Frank?  I can't because this excellent car and the rest of Pontiac is gone and never coming back.

The Truth About Cars.Com         http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/review-200-pontiac-g8-gxp/

This site is not generally known as a fan of GM’s cars. And yet TTAC has lavished much love upon Pontiac’s thunder from down under: the G8 GT. The general line: if the 361-horsepower V8 version is magic, the 415-horsepower GXP should be an automotive miracle. Especially as the GXP offers the option of a manual gearbox. So, did Pontiac save its best car ever for last?

Conclusions: Stein for Congress 2010 Frank was wrong in 2008 when he caved to public opinion and voted  NO- to not help- the Domestic Auto Industry.  The Big 3- part of our legacy- and still here thankfully, but who were at the mercy of a once in a  100 year recession and credit squeeze caused by a massive housing bubble which Frank actually contributed to, when he voted wrong again 11 years earlier, to deregulate the banks and Wall Street firms, and allow them to merge.  Ironies abound, see Glass-Steagall.

The Big Idea- Stein for Congress 2010

It was, and still is, in our national interest that  the recently- very competitive Big 3- are alive, and helping keep Toyota, or any  foreign auto maker, honest now and in the future.

Mr. Perskie writes:
If I were in the market for a car right now, I’d buy a Toyota.  Really.

The price will be right, and the truth is, Toyota makes a good car. Always has. I have no doubt the company will fix its sudden-acceleration problem, and this whole thing will fade pretty quickly......

Congressman a.k.a. Gary Stein

Mr. Perskie, here's where I part ways with you- I'm usually on board! And here’s where "I" lose votes this coming election if this sneaks out (lol). If you can forget for a few seconds the poor folks killed in this preventable mishap, Toyota got what was coming! They're arrogant, and Japan doesn't trade fairly with the United States....and if this blog was set up properly (I keep making suggestions) we'd have a great discussion going on this controversial topic, wouldn't we? It’s not just the government (and Toyota) that’s slow to respond- please for your sake, promote this blog already! As far as the accelerator issue, why are accelerators electronic? Because it's technologically feasible; that's all- plain and simple. Complexity for complexity sake, it seems to me. Go back to a simple accelerator cables and those Toyota customers would still be alive. Signed Congressman, not Frank and not Abe.

SQUABBLE OVER SOMETHING ELSE (war on terrorism, Supreme Court etc) NOT ENERGY

If Democrats want higher CAFÉ standards from the Detroit automakers, Democrats should build a coalition and stop blocking the Republicans who want more nuclear electrical energy plants, which I also support and believe we need.

If higher CAFÉ (fuel) standards would break the backs of the Detroit carmakers, then TAKE OVER their retired and current employee health care costs, and calls it a prelude (test run) to National Health Insurance.  NHI would make Democrats, my wife and myself very happy, yet two of us are registered Republicans.  How's that possible? Because most of us aren't party loons, and are open to compromise. (As for the Big Three's health care liabilities, we'll have to take them on anyway if they go bankrupt, so why not do it while GM, Ford and Chrysler still have a pulse).''
